MEPA requires that state agencies comply with its terms "to the fullest extent possible.". The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is charged with protecting a clean and healthy environment as guaranteed to our citizens by our State Constitution.

Our ultimate goal is to protect public health and to maintain Montana's high quality of life for current and future generations. Since the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) has been Montana’s bedrock environmental law.

In its simplest terms, MEPA institutes a “look before you leap” policy by requiring state agencies to consider the environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of proposals like mines, power plants, subdivisions, and timber sales, before the project is approved.
